Maundy Thursday 2020

Maundy Thursday 2020

What sort of word is Maundy, anyway?

Short for the Latin maundatum, or mandate.

It is a day we remember Jesus’ mandate to love, from the 13th chapter of John’s gospel:

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

John 13:34-35

That Thursday was also a day of servant leadership, as Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, and then led them into a celebration of God’s grace we call communion. That means of grace endures to this day, even though, for a time, we can’t gather at the communion rail. Nonetheless we remember the Sacrament Jesus instituted on this day so long ago, so far away.
