Chosen. Do you feel like you were chosen for anything? I confess I was always the last one picked when teams were chosen. Problem was, I never seemed to keep my eye on the ball, so if I managed to even make contact with a pitched ball, it never went very far, hence my bench-warming history.

So its nice to read in John’s gospel, as Jesus speaks to His disciples, that God chooses even the unlikeliest among us to be on His team. Those words, chosen in Him, are reflected to us in Paul’s first letter to the church at Corinth (1Corinthians 1:27 and following). Not His original disciples, we are nonetheless disciples chosen later, and no less deliberately, than those original 12. For God knew us from before the beginning of time, and when His time was right, created us as a chosen people, a holy nation, a people belonging to God.

And the chosen -ness we share is not of our own merit, but that of Jesus, poured out upon us from the cross and in His holy word. God has been choosing His servants since creation – we are but the current generation of those chosen by Him to serve, love and obey Him, and the amazing thing is that even in our sinfulness our chosen-ness is not destroyed.
