 GOD PROMISED A KING

Psalm 2:6-7 “I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.”  I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, “You are my Son; today I have become your father.”

The Christian definition of Messiah is that it refers to Jesus of Nazareth, whom Christians believe fulfilled the messianic prophecies in the Old Testament.  Jesus is the “Christ” or the “Messiah” who came to earth to keep God’s law perfectly, die on Calvary’s cross and on the third day thereafter rise back to life.  This is why the Angel told Jospeh to name the boy with whom his wife was pregnant Jesus.  The name Jesus means “the saving one” or “the one who saves” from which we speak of Jesus as our Savior.    God appointed Jesus and sent Him to earth to carry out this mission.  Messiah means “the one set apart by God,” which in this case God set Him apart to take away the sins of the world.

Sixteen of the one-hundred-fifty Psalms are Messianic.  Psalm 2, from which today’s devotional verses are taken, is the first of these sixteen Psalms.  In verses 6 & 7 God says, “I have installed My king on Zion, My holy mountain.”  I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, “You are My Son; today I have become Your Father.”

Kings usually ascend to their throne because of their blood line.  The oldest son of a king becomes the next king.  This continues as long as there is a male heir “waiting in the wings.”  This is not what Psalm 2 says.  Yahweh is speaking in Psalm 2:6.  Note that God says that He will install the king of His choosing.  And, He says that the throne will be located on “His” holy mountain.  This is Old Testament language for Jerusalem.

Whereas human beings think they are in charge and kings believe they are in charge of succession to their throne, Yahweh says this is not the case with His chosen people. He will put on the throne who He decides belongs there.

(Colossians 1:15-17) Jesus is “Lord of lords and King of kings . . .” (Revelation 19:16)

Prayer:  Jesus, set apart by Your Father to save me and all people from eternal condemnation and placed You on Your throne in heaven to rule over heaven and earth, I bow my knee in honor and reverence to You.  Amen.
