A SERIES OF DEVOTIONS BASED ON PETER’S SECOND LETTER
EARWITNESSES
2 Peter 1:17 “He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to Him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.”
Yesterday’s devotional verse emphasized that Peter, James, and John were eyewitnesses of Jesus Divine Nature. That was notable indeed. They beheld with their own eyes the glory of the very Son of God. What an awesome sight that was. You noted yesterday, Peter did not go into great detail trying to describe what they saw. What they saw was beyond words.
Now, today’s devotional verse focuses upon the second way that the Divine nature of Jesus was manifested to Peter, James, and John. The very voice of God spoke to them. God’s words entered into their ears and they heard Him say, “This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.” Note the verb is in the present tense. Thus, God was saying to them, the one who is being transformed this moment before your eyes is “my Son.”
God left no doubt in Peter, James, or John’s minds what was happening. First God revealed to them with His personal words that Jesus was His Son. Second, God said to them that they were to “listen” to what Jesus said. Peter’s earlier confession of faith in Jesus was reinforced by God’s voice: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:68-69)
Through the pen of St. Peter, today you have heard the voice of God saying to you that Jesus is His one and only Son. He is the one you confess in the 2nd article of the Apostle’s Creed that God sent as the world’s Savior. God says to you, as He did to Peter, James, and John, “Listen to Him.” Listen to Him, because as Peter confessed as recorded in John 6:68-69, Jesus has for you “the words of eternal life.” God grant you the faith to believe that Jesus is the Holy One of God sent by Him to save you from hell and take you to heaven.
Prayer: Thank You Yahweh for giving me today a glimpse of the Divine nature of Your Son Jesus, my Lord and my Savior. Amen.
Christ, whose glory fills the skies, Christ, the true and only light,
Sun of righteousness, arise; Triumph o’er the shades of night,
Day-spring from on high, be near; Day-star, in my heart appear.
Dark and cheerless is the morn Unaccompanied by Thee;
Joyless is the day’s return Till Thy mercy’s beams I see,
Till they inward light impart, Glad my eyes, and warm my heart.
Visit then this soul of mine, Pierce the gloom of sin and grief;
Fill me, radiancy divine, Scatter all my unbelief;
More and more Thyself display, Shining to the perfect day.
