A SERIES OF DEVOTIONS BASED ON PETER’S SECOND LETTER
PROPHETS SPOKE FROM GOD
2 Peter 1:20-21 “Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
The sinful nature of human beings causes their mind to discount, if not outright, reject the words of the Old Testament prophets. The enlightened minds of people today rationalize that the words of the Old Testament are ancient and out-of-date. They do not stand up against modern day research and the deep thinkers of today.
To those who discount and reject the words of the prophets, today’s devotional verses declare, “ . . . prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit . . . “ Prophets were men, sinful and common in so many ways, but when filled with the Holy Spirit they were instruments of God to present His word to the world in all of its truth and purity.
The Lord God (Yahweh) spoke by the mouth and through the pens of prophets. These prophets’ words were not their own when speaking from God. Their words were God’s word. God caused them to speak and write. God gave them the actual words to speak and write. The words they spoke and wrote from God were His words.
The one who caused these men to write and speak His words ensures that they are His words. The one who caused these men to write and speak His words, was the force behind their purpose which was to make those who read them and heard them believe in the Triune God and especially to be filled with faith to trust in God’s Son Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins, eternal life, and salvation.
The Bible is a book of books, and each book is in its entirety God’s word. His word is truth. (John 17:17) He gave His word to the prophets, apostles, and evangelists because His word is His power for the salvation of all people. (Romans 1:16-17) He used these men to write and speak His word because He desires all human beings to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth of His Word.
Prayer: Grant me, O Lord, faith to believe Your Word of truth for Jesus’ sake. In His name. Amen.
