Dealing with Disaster

Today’s Perspectives marks the conclusion of the 15th consecutive year of this publication. Not one single Thursday in 15 years has gone by without an article in my readers’ Inbox. That’s 780 weeks in a a row! Not sure how much longer the Spirit will move me to keep going. Stay tuned.  The past few weeks we’ve all seen and heard news reports of an incredible, unprecedented number oof tornados that have wreaked havoc and destruction in many southern, eastern, and midwestern states of our country. It’s difficult to comprehend the emotions of despair, hopelessness, devastation, bewilderment, and grief that a tornado can produce.  Those emotions are multiplied by subsequent feelings of frustration, bewilderment, fear, and maybe even anger when confronted with the ordeal of picking up the pieces, dealing with insurance adjustors, trying to recover one’s losses, replace one’s possessions, and rebuild one’s life.  Those challenges are exponentially compounded if the storm also took the precious life of a spouse, child, parent, grandparent, other relative or close friend. On a generally less destructive but nonetheless serious level, people often face financial setback, damage or destruction to their home from fire or natural disaster, wayward children, troubled grandchildren, serious illness, personal or family substance abuse, tragic medical diagnosis, marital stress, or divorce, not to mention the death of a spouse or other loved one.  The storms of life are real. Dealing with such troubles and tragedies is not easy.
How do people who face tragedy, trauma, or serious setback, whether caused by forces of nature, unthinkable violence, or human error, cope with the loss such events invariably produce? Through the words of Jesus, God promises to turn our worries into assurance. In His Sermon on the     Mount, Jesus said, “Don’t worry about tomorrow. Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all the things you’re worried about will be provided.” (Matt. 6:31-33) It is sometimes easier said than done, right? In a world filled with uncertainty, doubt, and turmoil, it can be all too easy to waver in our faith, to question whether the promises of God hold true. Yet, our hope is not in vain. It is grounded in the unchanging character of God Himself—faithful, trustworthy, true to His word. Despite the storms that may rage around us, we are called to cling to this hope with unwavering confidence, knowing that He who promised is faithful. What greater hope can one have, especially when dealing with disaster?
